Building Blocks:
Contemporary Prints by Rebecca Layton (2012)
The Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing is pleased to introduce visitors to the hand block prints of Rebecca Layton (b.1970), an American artist who travelled to India on a Fulbright-Nehru Scholarship. While here, Layton experimented with a range of Indian crafts under the tutelage of a variety of craftspeople.
Inspired by the rapidly changing scene of an increasingly industrialised subcontinent, Layton discovered beauty amidst the cacophony of mobile phone towers, chaotic electrical lines and crush of new high rises dotting the horizon. Nurtured by Indian artisans and steeped in their block printing methods, Layton’s dynamic designs reflect a true merger of contemporary imagery, traditional craft and limitless possibilities for hand block printing — an example of global collaboration at its best.
